Exchange money before or after flight to Europe?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I’m flying from the US to Europe on vacation in a few weeks, and I’m wondering whether it makes better financial sense for me to exchange my money to Euros before I leave or once I get there. Additionally, if it’s better to exchange to Euros in the US, should I do it where I live (in DC) or in the airport I’m leaving from (Atlanta)?

Thanks!

What’s the best way to change money to foreign currency?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I’m going to India in December and also Amsterdam (only in Amsterdam a few hours). I’ll need to change my money to Rupees and then to Euros. What’s the best way to do that? I know that, for example, it’s about 40 Rupees to a dollar - but if I go through the bank, I’ll only get about 35 Rupees to a dollar. Next year, I’ll be moving over there and will be changing a LARGE amount of money over (about $12,000)…so not sure how to do that and lose the least. I can set up an account here in the US through Wells Fargo that allows me to transfer money cheaply - but still, I guess I won’t get so much. Thanks for your advice. :)

What dangers does the USA face if the Euro replaces the Dollar as the international currency?

Friday, September 4th, 2009

There was a time that the free world once needed a strong U.S. military backed by a strong dollar to offset a Soviet threat. Since abandoning the gold standard, the only thing that has supported the value of the dollar has been the international currency market.
After WWII, the U.S. dollar replaced the British pound as the international currency. Countries across the global hold trillions of U.S. dollars to back their own currency.
Times are different today. There is no Soviet threat. What motivates the capitalists world to support the dollar today?
International trade in Euros is on the rise. What will the USA face if the dollar loses hegemony?

Making a profit off of fluctuating currency?

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Ok, I have no strong background in economics, nor do i know much about what I am talking about here.

But, I wondered if I exchange dollars for pounds and euros, and the worth of pounds and euros went up, can I trade the currency back for dollars to make a profit?

And for that matter, where does one go to exchange currency anyway?
