Please can anyone help me with this?

I do pay my rent putting cash into my landlord’s private account every month, I am leaving the house now and he is saying that I missed one month payment 18 months ago and he is not going to give me my deposit back, I told him that is impossible (no one contacted me to let me know, normally if you don’t pay your rent your landlord contact you and try to make you pay), he said he emailed me (I never received any emails, and I told him if I ignored him when he claimed his money why he allowed me to stay in the house and is claiming the money now!!), finally he could’t find those emails to prove that I did not pay (according to him), of course he couldn’t because those emails don’t exist.
Now, he said he is going to give me the deposit because he couldn’t find those emails but he wants to go to the bank with me to check if there was any problem with the money, my question is,

Is it possible that the money did not arrive to him? Can my bank prove that I paid (or that I did not pay)? Note that I was putting the money directly into his bank account by cash.

The thing is that I do not know what bank he wants to go to, because I did not always pay in the same branch.
